Jaharn Giles runs through the reasons for experiencing the Bay of Fires Lodge walk, including seriously great food and the best guides ever!
Like you need any excuse to visit Tasmania! If you aren’t quite sure what the Bay of Fires Lodge Walk is or if you need convincing, even if it’s just a little bit, here are 11 reasons why you need to do the Bay of Fires Lodge Walk ASAP.
1. YOU’LL MEET LIKEMINDED PEOPLE
One of the best reasons to do the Bay of Fires Lodge Walk in Tasmania with the Tasmania Walking Co. is because you’ll get to meet likeminded people. I am a huge fan of hiking, but not many of my friends are, so I mostly hike solo. However, being able to hike for four days with a group of people who like hiking as much as I do is a huge treat! It felt great because we were all super passionate and genuinely interested in the local flora and fauna.
2. YOU CAN TRAVEL SOLO OR WITH A GROUP
What I loved most about this walking trip was that it doesn’t matter if you are travelling solo, like I was, or you are travelling with a loved one, or a group of friends – everyone is super friendly.
3. YOU’LL LOVE THE GUIDES
I’ve been on my fair share of hikes over the years and I’ve certainly had some interesting guides, and I can confidently say my guides (hello Justin and Dee!) were the best guides I’ve EVER had on a hiking trip. Seriously. They were very patient, relaxed, knowledgeable, supportive and funny – the perfect combination.
4. YOU’LL FALL IN LOVE WITH THE WILDLIFE
I love wildlife, and on this trip, I saw an abundance. From huge ants to hopping kangaroos, soaring eagles and adorable wombats, the wildlife in Tasmania is seriously one of the biggest reasons why I keep coming back. There is just so much to see, and so much to learn!
5. YOU GET TO WALK ACROSS A SHELL COVERED BEACH
On the third day of the hike, the guides lead us over a beach completely covered with beautiful white sea shells. The crunch, crunch which could be heard underneath my hiking boots is a sound, and a sight, I will never forget. It was breathtaking!
6. YOU’LL EAT SERIOUSLY GOOD FOOD
Second to the actual walk, I have no doubts the second biggest reason why people book this walking trip is because of the food – it’s legit. I’m talking soba noodles with sliced bok choy, barbequed salmon and a homemade Asian dressing. And that was just the first night! Dessert is also a specialty and my favourite was the vanilla panacotta with balsamic strawberries – yum. Cheese platters are also in abundance. As were the endless bottles of wine. Hurrah! Because let’s be honest, the last thing you want to do after hiking 14km each day in soft sand is having to cook a meal…and dessert. So the guides take care of the cooking. Incredible!
7. YOU GET TO SLEEP IN A SERIOUSLY AWESOME TENT
There’s no camping with the Tasmania Walking Co. because it’s all about glamping! That’s right, after the first day of soft sand hiking, I was rewarded with my very own gorgeous tent with two beds and complete privacy. It was already set up, which meant I didn’t need to lift a finger – such a luxury after a long day of hiking.
8. YOU GET YOUR OWN GORGEOUS ROOM AT THE PRIVATE LODGE
The benefit of doing the Bay of Fires Lodge Walk with the Tasmania Walking Co. is that you get to spend two gloriously relaxing nights at the Bay of Fires Lodge. Complete with our own private bedroom overlooking the bay, it offered the perfect opportunity to have some down time in complete comfort.
9. YOU HAVE YOUR OWN PRIVATE BEACH
The Bay of Fires Lodge actually has its own private beach – yup! Other than guests, usually there is no more than 20 at any given night, no one else is allowed to use the beach. It’s quite impressive to say the least.
10. YOU’LL GET FIT
I’m all about travelling with a purpose, so I love to include any adventure I can – hiking, swimming, skiing, cycling. One of the best reasons to do this hike is that not only does your sense of adventure grow and you get to meet likeminded people, it also means you’ll get fit whilst having fun! Now how good does that sound? Pretty good to me!
11. YOU GET TO HAVE AN OUTDOOR BATH
Yes, you’ve read correctly. The Bay of Fires Lodge Spa offers many divine services but the best, in my opinion, is the outdoor bathtub. After indulging in a massage, or a foot therapy session, or a mud wrap, the best way to finish your Lodge Spa experience is to book yourself an outdoor bath experience. Located in a private pavilion, all I had to do was simply relax in the bath and enjoy a glass of wine as I enjoyed the view of the Bay of Fires surrounding me. It was utterly perfect.
